Student Visa
International students who wish to study in Canada will in most cases require a student visa.
Exceptions
A study permit may not be necessary if:
- The duration of the accepted program is six months or less,
- The parents of the applicants (who are under the age of 18) have legal status in Canada,
- Applicants or relatives who are staffed by a foreign representative to Canada which must be recognized by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, OR
- The applicant, under the Visiting Forces Act, is a member of an armed force (not including Canada).
For prospective students in a program or course that extends the allotted six months period, a study permit would be necessary.
If the length of the desired program is within the time frame of six or less months, a student visa will not be required with the prearranged condition that the completion of the curriculum does not exceed the allotted period that is allowed in Canada.
A student visa would also be necessary if at least one of the following conditions are applicable:
- The student has the intentions to be employed by the campus;
- The student wishes to take part in an internship or a co-operative course;
- The student is going to participate in a practical training course in which the student will be paid.
Eligibility
In order to apply for a student visa you must:
- provide the letter of acceptance to a school, or post-secondary institution that has accreditation in Canada,
- have proof of funds that will suffice for living expenses, tuition, and travel costs (to and from Canada) for the applicant and family members accompanying the applicant,
- have no history of any criminal offences,
- have good health and if required, be medically examined, and
- have applied for Certificat dÕaccpectation du Quebec (CAQ) if the desired course, whether it be a short-term course or a course that surpasses six months, is situated in the province of Quebec.
Along with the above requirements, applicants must demonstrate that the objective of coming to Canada is to study and that they have the intentions of returning to their country of origin once the program they are in has been completed. In certain circumstances, along with the student visa, the acquisition of a temporary resident visa (TRV) may also be required to be eligible to temporarily reside in Canada.

For any individual shifting his or her base to another country, the next major worry is to sponsor the immediate family.

Like many other countries, Canada also follows certain guidelines for family sponsorships. Under this program, close relatives and immediate family of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can migrate if they comply to few conditions.
